| It has been reported that a Malta-flagged tanker is under attack approximately 553nm Southeast of Hobyo, Somalia. One craft with armed perpetrators has approached and fired shots at the tanker, resulting in the armed security team returning fire. The UKMTO have reported that as well as small arms fire, the pirates have fired RPG's towards the vessel and that the pirates have boarded the tanker. UPDATE 1: Further information has been received stating that there is not an armed security team onboard the vessel so there was no exchange of fire. It is reported that the crew have been able to retreat to the citadel. UPDATE 2: EUNAVFOR Operation Atalanta have confirmed they are in contact with the tanker and have requested naval assets to the vessel location. UPDATE 3: It has been reported that a Spanish frigate under EUNAVFOR has arrived on scene, and the naval personnel have boarded the vessel. A full search has been conducted which has confirmed the pirates are no longer onboard. All crew members are confirmed safe and uninjured, the tanker is expected to continue her voyage to Durban. | |||||
