Open-sources have reported that Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia effective immediately on 20 July 2026. The Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, declared a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia based on the principle of "siege for siege." The Yemeni Armed Forces statement outlined five key points: First, the maritime ban takes effect immediately from the announcement. Second, the Houthis affirm the right to respond to any siege with a siege and to escalate comprehensively. Third, the Yemeni Armed Forces stated full readiness for all options and warned that any reckless action by Saudi Arabia would be met with comprehensive and harsh escalation. Fourth, the statement called on the Yemeni population to continue general mobilisation and to support the fronts with fighters. Fifth, the statement extended greetings to those who participated in a recent large-scale demonstration and assured them that efforts would continue to recover rights and end what they described as an unjust siege.
