Open-sources have reported that U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) concluded an evening wave of strikes against Iran at 0100 UTC on 16 July 2026. U.S. forces targeted Iranian command centres, missile and drone capabilities, air defence sites and coastal surveillance facilities to further degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM used precision munitions to strike targets in multiple locations including Bandar Abbas (exact time and positions not specified). Earlier on 16 July 2026, American forces struck coastal defence and cruise missile sites on Greater Tunb Island during a 90-minute wave (exact time not specified). In response, Iran claimed to have carried out drone and missile strikes on U.S. military facilities in Jordan and Kuwait. According to Iran's state broadcaster IRIB, the strikes were conducted in retaliation for recent U.S. strikes on Iranian territory. The ongoing operations have been designated 'Operation Lightning' carried out by the Iranian Army and 'Operation Nasr 2' carried out by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The Iranian Army reported that in the ninth phase of 'Operation Lightning,' it targeted communication systems and fuel tanks at the Al-Azraq base in Jordan with drones. The IRGC, in its Announcement No. 15, claimed responsibility for strikes on the U.S. military's Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait in the eighth wave of Operation Nasr 2. The IRGC stated that the strikes targeted the C-RAM early warning radar system and gathering areas at the base.
