| Open-sources have reported that an explosion occurred aboard a Liberia-flagged tanker on 21 July 2026, approximately 20 nautical miles southeast of Sfântu Gheorghe, Romania (exact time not specified). While Romanian authorities have described the incident as an "incident aboard the ship," unverified reports suggest the vessel may have been struck by an unmanned aerial vehicle. The Romanian head of state confirmed that the tanker was struck outside Romania's territorial waters. Shortly after the incident, two vessels operated by the Romanian Agency for Saving Human Life at Sea (ARSVOM) arrived at the scene and evacuated the entire crew, all of whom were brought ashore. A tugboat dispatched to the area is ensuring that the vessel does not drift and pose any further risk to the safety of navigation. The extent of damage to the vessel, crew casualties and environmental impact have not been reported at this time. | |||||
