Open-sources have reported that French naval forces intercepted and boarded a Russian oil tanker whilst underway in international waters, approximately 400nm West of Brittany, France (exact time and position not specified). The tanker is suspected of being part of Russia's shadow fleet and had been flying a false flag when detained. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the operation was conducted with UK support, including a helicopter from HMS Somerset which provided tracking and monitoring assistance. Armed French naval officers boarded the vessel via helicopter. The Kremlin has described the seizure as "illegal" and "bordering on international piracy". French authorities stated the operation was undertaken in strict compliance with the law of the sea to prevent vessels from circumventing international sanctions imposed on Russian oil exports.
