The UKMTO have received a report from the Master of a vessel, stating that a splash and smoke was witnessed astern of the vessel, whilst underway approximately 128nm Southeast of Aden, Yemen (exact position not specified). Military authorities have then informed the UKMTO that the vessel has been hit by a projectile and reports indicate there is a fire onboard. UPDATE 1: Clearwater has received further information that the subject vessel, is the Netherlands-flagged cargo vessel that was involved in the incident reported in CW Alert 005- (Sep 25). The crew have been evacuated by helicopter from a French Naval vessel with support from Greek military forces, to an Oman-flagged tanker. Reports indicate that two crew members have been wounded as a result of the attack. UPDATE 2: EUNAVFOR have confirmed that all nineteen crew members of Russian, Ukrainian, Filipino, and Sri Lankan nationalities were rescued. One of the wounded crew is in a stable condition, the second has been seriously injured and transferred to Djibouti. The cargo vessel is adrift and on fire and represents a navigational hazard. UPDATE 3: It has been reported that salvage operations are currently ongoing. UPDATE 4: Reports state that the vessel is no longer on fire and is being towed towards a safe harbour. UPDATE 5: Spliethoff, the shipping company that owns the vessel, have announced that one of the crew members that were evacuated to Djibouti for medical treatment, has passed away due to his injuries sustained during the attack. The other seafarer remains under medical care in Djibouti but is expected to make a recovery. The remaining crew have been repatriated to their home countries. |
