Open-sources have reported that Russian transport authorities are considering deploying mobile fire groups aboard grain vessels transiting the Sea of Azov in response to ongoing Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russian maritime logistics. The proposed defensive measure would involve embarked guard detachments equipped with machine guns and suitable mounts for temporary shipboard installation. These mobile fire groups would board vessels at the port of departure on the Sea of Azov, provide manually-operated air defenses through the Kerch Strait, and disembark after passage, with weaponry removed upon departure to avoid regulatory complications when crossing international borders. According to open-source reporting, Russian authorities are also considering passive defenses such as cables and mesh strung from deckhouses to catch and detonate drones before impact, as well as military patrol boat escorts and convoy operations. The measures are being evaluated following a Ukrainian drone campaign that has targeted Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov. Open-sources report that approximately one quarter of Russia's grain export capacity passes through the Sea of Azov. On 24 July 2026, a Ukrainian FP-1 drone reportedly struck a Belize-flagged bulk carrier in the northeastern Black Sea whilst the vessel was heading toward the Taman Peninsula (exact time and position not specified).
