The UKMTO has reported a vessel being boarded 460nm East of Eyl, Somalia. Authorities are investigating. UPDATE 1: Up to six unauthorised armed persons have boarded a merchant vessel. The Master reports crew have mustered in the citadel. UPDATE 2: CSO reports that ship's navigational lighting is limited and likely to be below minimum anti-collision specification. Vessels in the vicinity should be aware of the potential hazard in position 06 27 11 N 057 25 32 E UPDATE 3: The IMB have confirmed that the vessel involved is the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier, LILA NORFOLK (IMO- 9281700). The bulk carrier's latest position is 09°02'22N 058°19'12E at 0829 UTC 5th January, and shows she is underway at a speed of 10.2 knots on a course of 16 degrees. UPDATE 4: Military forces have boarded the vessel, conducted a search and found no authorised persons. Crew are reported safe and the vessel is proceeding out of the area. UPDATE 5: The pirates were onboard a skiff launched from a mothership and were armed with machine guns and rocket launchers. |
