Open-source reports state that an explosion occurred on a Togo-flagged cargo vessel approximately 10nm East of Sulina, Romania (exact time not speicifed) . The Master reported the incident occurred at the stern of the vessel and issued a distress call requesting for the evacuation of all twelve crew members. Images show that the vessel is stable but is down at the stern. The cargo vessel was loaded with cement and her AIS data listed the destination as Izmail, Ukraine. Local media reports stated that the explosion happened in the vessel's engine room after allegedly hitting a sea mine, however the crew were reported to have observed some divers near the vessel prior to the incident. The Romanian Naval Authority stated that there were no indications that the explosion had been caused by a sea mine and that the cause is not known at this time. All twelve crew members were successfully evacuated and handed over to medical teams as one crew member had sustained burns on their right side. |
